Mass Hysteria

Duration: 40 min.

Premiere: TeaterØen, DK (March, 2013)

Mass Hysteria explores the mass hysterical symptoms within choreography, what is also known as ‘unison’. By performing the exact same material, the duo reveals both empathetic and apathetic aspects of crowd culture, through which another unforeseen mass hysteria might appear...
As a foundation the piece is built on a series of strict re-enactments of video’s found on youtube.com that portray real, mass events. In this way the duo appropriates (living) objet trouvé, a term borrowed from visual arts, to a stage-art context. Mass Hysteria is both a plastic representation and a real crowd symptom. A state of multiplication and mass production.

In 2013 Mass Hysteria received the Danish Arts Foundation's annual award:
"Mass Hysteria was a lovely surprise early in the season. It was subsequently repeated in various versions - all in tight unison choreography with riding helmets, ankle socks and minimal mass hysterical gestures added to a syncopated breathing. Behind the show are two choreographers and performers with flair for renewal of the duo format. Marie-Louise Stentebjerg and Ida-Elisabeth Larsen call their joint project two-women-machine-show. We are grateful to them for pushing our ideas of what dance can be (...)"
